Week 4 of the Elbo Room Trivia Tournament

Remember that one year in the winter Olympics when the Australian speedskater actually won a gold medal when everybody else crashed in front of him?

Yeah, that’s how I sorta feel about last night’s tournament run, as I pick myself up off the ice.

I had a decent run, being able to nail the decade and location of the first Gold’s Gym (1960’s, California) and got three of the four teams Siena played in the past two NCAA tournaments (Villanova, Vanderbilt and Ohio State, I forgot about Louisville).

But the triple bonus question killed me. “In the Beatles’ song, ‘When I’m 64,’ what are the names of the three grandchildren in the song?”

I couldn’t think of it. I knew the answer was in the refrain, but I couldn’t think of it – especially since someone put a Pearl Jam song on the digital jukebox and cranked it up to 11. I had to skip the question, and it cost me dearly when other teams knew the three grandchildren (Vera, Chuck and Dave).

And the final question, with a category of “MTV Awards,” I was in 10th place and needed a miracle. I bet all my points and hoped for the best.

“What actor won a 2000 MTV Movie Award for playing a villian, then next year appeared in the 2001 MTV Video of the Year, Fatboy Slim’s ‘Weapon of Choice'”?

Oh great. The minute the host said those last five words, I knew everyone in the bar would be scribbling down “Christopher Walken.” And I was right.

And surprise of surprises, the one team that never wins, the one team that finishes the night with 10 points and writes down “Bob Saget” as their answer, no matter what the final question may be – is the team known as Clay Aiken’s Skid Marks. They took the five points for finishing the night in first place, while for another week I garnered no playoff points.

I guess in the case of Clay Aiken’s Skid Marks, the old adage is true – persistence pays off. Even a broken clock will tell the correct time at least twice a day.

So after three weeks, here are the standings, and remember – only the top eight squads get into the final round.
